World Thrombosis Day is October 13 – Did you know..1 in 4 people die from causes related to thrombosis.  It’s a leading cause of global death and disability.  Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot in either in the artery or vein –  the one disorder that causes the world’s top three cardiovascular killers:  heart attack, stroke and venous thromboembolism (VTE).

A clot in the vein (usually in the leg or pelvis) is known as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and a clot that breaks off and travels to the lungs is known as a pulmonary embolism (PE). Together, DVT and PE make up venous thromboembolism (VTE).
