Weddings – Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I book a ceremony space for?
Ceremony spaces must be booked for a minimum of two hours, including setup and packdown. If you require additional time or would like to remain in the space for photography, we recommend booking a longer timeslot.
What happens in wet weather?
As ceremonies take place outdoors, there is no indoor contingency option in the event of inclement weather.
Can we use Winthrop Hall?
Weddings and photography are permitted in the surrounding gardens only. Winthrop Hall is not available.
Is music permitted during the ceremony?
Unamplified music is permitted. Approval is required for amplified music or bagpipes, as other events may be taking place on campus.
What are the ceremony venue capacities?
- Sunken Garden: 200 guests
- Tropical Grove: 150 guests
- Prescott Court: 750 guests
When can suppliers access the space?
Your hire company or stylist may only access the venue during your booked timeslot. Additional time must be booked if required.
What decorations are allowed?
Free-standing items such as chairs, signing tables and carpets are permitted. Decorations must not be attached to buildings, walls or trees, and no structures may be pegged into the ground.
Is power available?
Domestic electrical outlets are available in all venues. Please contact us for further details.
Can vehicles access ceremony locations?
Vehicles are not permitted within the pedestrian areas of the campus.
Is confetti allowed?
Confetti, rose petals and rice are not permitted to ensure the preservation of the environment and consideration for other campus users.
Can alcohol be served during the ceremony?
Yes, however a liquor permit must be completed and submitted with your booking. Please contact us for further information.
Who is responsible for cleaning up?
The hirer is responsible for leaving the area clean and tidy. Additional cleaning or repair fees may apply if the space is not left in satisfactory condition.
Are there restroom facilities nearby?
Yes, restroom facilities are located within walking distance of each venue.
Are all dates available for weddings?
As a working University, priority is given to teaching, examinations and graduations. As a result, most weekdays and some weekends are unavailable.
Can I change my booking details?
Changes to booking times, dates or venues will incur a $50 administration fee.
What is the cancellation policy?
- Cancellations more than 90 days prior: 50% cancellation fee applies
- Cancellations within 90 days: full hire fee is forfeited
Is photography included with a ceremony booking?
Yes, a complimentary one-hour photography pass is included with all ceremony bookings.
Can we take photos without a ceremony booking?
Yes, however a one-hour photography pass must be purchased in advance. Passes are limited and groups without a valid pass will be asked to leave.
Can we extend our photography time?
Additional time can be arranged by purchasing extra one-hour passes.
Can we choose specific photo locations?
While there are many beautiful locations on campus, availability cannot be guaranteed due to other events. Flexibility may be required.
To minimise overlap, passes are limited however, other photography groups may be present. We ask that all parties cooperate respectfully.
Can we take photos in the ceremony spaces?
Photography in the Sunken Garden, Tropical Grove and Prescott Court is reserved for couples who have booked these locations for their ceremony.
Can we bring alcohol for photos?
Alcohol is not permitted unless a liquor permit has been obtained. Please contact us for further details.
Can we hold our reception at The University Club?
Yes. The University Club offers a purpose-built reception venue on campus. To book, you must be a Club Member or have a Member make the booking on your behalf. Find out more here.
Are marquee receptions available?
The University Club does not cater for marquee weddings. For marquee events, bookings must be made directly with the University and external catering arranged. You can check availability and find out more here.
Can we use Somerville Auditorium for a marquee reception?
Somerville Auditorium is unavailable for marquee weddings from November to April due to the Perth Film Festival. It may be available outside of this period. Find out more here.
